A regular addition to our neighborhood and our view is this great blue heron, who comes daily to feed on the mice and other small creatures that live in the field. He's shy and spreads his wings and leaves at the least disturbance, so these photos were taken through the window (click to enlarge). We admire his patience and can waste a lot of time watching him stand unmoving or barely moving while waiting for prey. Yesterday Ray watched him catch two mice in quick succession: strike, catch, lift head, swallow.
He's out there now, standing in a very wet rain, his feathers ruffled by the wind.
