A surprising sighting

Although this valley was named by the Romans for Diana, goddess of the hunt, there is little wildlife remaining. In the six years we’ve had this house we’ve seen one fox, several rabbits, a good number of hawks, an occasional eagle, a couple of snakes, and a few wild boars. So I was shocked and pleased this morning when, during my regular walk, I looked up to see a large deer running across the field to my right. I must have missed seeing her cross the road ahead of me for she was close, and she certainly saw me. She bounded over the cut hay until she reached a hillock and then turned to stare back. I stared too. After several silent, out-of-time minutes she darted away, turning back once to check on me before disappearing into the woods that crowd the now-dry creekbed.

Maybe next time I’ll spot a unicorn.
